The 7 Steps To Restoring Gut Health

Step 1 – Remove Dietary Triggers

If you’ve just been diagnosed with IBS and your GP or specialist has suggested you trial a low FODMAP diet then step one is my 'Implementing A Low FODMAP Diet Program' is a great place to start. Once you’ve completed 2-4 weeks on the diet and your symptoms have begun to settle, you’ll need to go through the reintroduction phase to identify which FODMAPs are the main culprits so we can personalise your plan for the long-term. All the information you need for this phase is in my FODMAP Reintroduction & Personalisation Phase Program.

If you have mild to moderate digestive symptoms but haven’t been diagnosed with IBS and you know that how you eat makes a difference to your symptoms, you may wish to start with my Gut Reset Program. This is like a detox where we remove the top food intolerance foods, sugar, processed food and other gut triggers for 3 weeks so we know how much better eating a clean, healthy diet makes us feel. This may be all you need to stop your digestive discomfort and improve bowel movements. If however you are looking for further improvements you can move to the next steps.

If you feel you've already cleaned up your diet and low FODMAPs hasn't helped you may need a different elimination diet to get you results. These diets require a more individual approach so book in for a Nutrition Strategy Session so we can work out your best next steps. Examples of other food intolerances and diets that can help are: salicylates, amines, glutamates, sulphites, oxalates, histamine, SIBO.

Step 2 - Testing

If you’ve been on the gut healing journey for a while and you feel you’ve tried elimination diets before and they haven’t given you much improvement, or you’re ready to learn what’s really going on in your gut it’s time for testing. There are various tests that help us work out what’s going on in your gut. I require a consultation to refer you for testing. This way we look at the most appropriate test to help identify what’s going on.

Tests I often use are looking for SIBO, parasites, bacterial dysbiosis, inflammatory markers, functional GIT markers, worms, fungi and yeast, bacterial pathogens and viral pathogens.

If you’re ready for answers you can book in for an initial nutrition consult. I’ll ask you to do a diet diary before the consult because as well as going through your testing options, I’ll go through your diet and put together a diet plan for you.

Step 4 – Addressing Lifestyle Factors That Affect Your Gut

Many of you will already know that stress impacts your gut symptoms. So do other lifestyle factors like sleep, not enough exercise or too much exercise, slowing down to breathe and eat mindfully. We can’t underestimate the impact non-dietary factors have on symptoms and healing. If you know you need to slow down and improve some of your daily habits to better manage your symptoms I have you covered in my Stress Management Program.

Check out my Program if you're ready to make improvements to your lifestyle.

Step 5 – Challenge & Reintroduction Of Foods

Elimination diets are not for the long-term. We want to go through a challenge phase to work out if you can now tolerate a food that previously caused you problems or if it still causes problems and you need to stay away from it for longer. If you’ve done the low FODMAP diet and now need to move onto the Reintroduction Phase see my FODMAP Reintroduction & Personalisation Phase Program where I step you through the process.

Following this step properly means you'll know your individual tolerance for each food group. This information is powerful and will help you keep your symptoms under control for the future.

Step 6 – Optimising Your Microbiome For Long-Term Gut Health

Whether your symptoms were resolved simply by following the Gut Reset or you’ve been through each of the above steps, we need to optimise your microbiome and restore balance. This will help with daily healthy bowel movements and keeping symptoms at bay. These steps help benefit anybody, even if you aren’t suffering digestive issues or if you only have the occasional bloating. Optimising our microbiome helps with overall health, your immune system, energy levels, skin health, mood and more. There are many studies linking healthy gut bacteria areas of health outside the gut. If you’d like to Optimise your Microbiome do join my Optimise Your Microbiome For Long-Term Gut Health Program.

This requires more time, testing, support and research so you’re encouraged to join me on the full Gut Restoration Program for answers.

My 7-Step Process To Restore Your Gut Health

There are numerous digestive disorders and symptoms you may be suffering from. The gut is complex and there can be many factors involved in your symptoms, however I’ve found that however complex or simple your case we can address symptoms with my 7-Step System to Restore Your Gut Health.

Whether you’ve had your symptoms for years or you are new to the journey of bloating, reflux, tummy pain, constipation, diarrhoea etc the steps are the same. The difference would be in the level of support and clarity you need to move through the steps.

Step 3 – Rebalancing With Supplements

Once we’ve identified the symptom triggers through an elimination diet or testing we can start using supplements in each stage of the rebalancing plan. For me to prescribe practitioner grade supplements to you we need to do a nutrition consult so I can ensure they are appropriate for you and your situation. If you’ve already done testing or you’d have success with an elimination diet but still have some symptoms book an Initial Nutrition Consult and get started with a supplement plan. I’ll review your diet, your history and your results before we start to address symptoms with supplements.

Gut Restoration Program (3 months)

This program follows the above steps while offering full email support and weekly Zoom calls. This way if you have a more complicated case, have lots of questions or anxiety you are guided through the steps.

What’s Included:

  • An initial nutrition consultation (via Zoom or the phone). This is a fact-finding session, that involves taking your case history, reviewing your 7-day diet diary and lifestyle, and analysis of your presenting condition.
  • 9 follow up consultations where we move through the steps and tweak the plan
  • Ongoing email support to optimise your results
  • An individualised diet plan & recipes (we’ll discuss together the type of diet plan, whether an elimination diet, low FODMAP diet, gluten free etc. depending on your current health issues and test results).
  • Reintroduction phase where the foods you’ve avoided will be reintroduced back into your diet and symptoms will be tracked. The result of this phase is understanding what foods work for you and what foods don’t, which puts you back in control of your symptoms.
  • The last step is a maintenance plan where we create a healthy balanced diet that keeps you and your gut bacteria happy.
  • This program includes the time I spend reviewing results and writing up the action steps, meal plans etc.

Any tests and supplements are an additional cost. These will always be discussed with you and prioritised where necessary.

If you feel the Program is for you or you’re looking for one-on-one support rather than an online course book in for a Nutrition Strategy Session so we can see if you’re a good fit to work together.
