How to Love Your Liver

Nourishing Your Liver: A Holistic Guide to Enhanced Liver Health

If you are thinking of embarking on a liver cleansing diet here are five ways to give your liver the care it needs:

  1. What We Eat

Eat organically grown foods that support liver function, like artichokes, oatmeal, garlic, cabbage, rosemary, turmeric, ginger, beets, orange foods and green foods - see our kale recipe below! Eating lots of colourful, fresh and raw foods helps give your liver a break.

  2. How We Eat

Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full. Eat slowly and chew your food until it’s become liquid to aid digestion. Be mindful when eating by avoiding watching TV and other noise and focus on enjoying your food.

  3. How We Move

Consistent, gentle activity like walking, hiking and biking improve circulation in and out of the liver. Find an exercise you love and do it regularly. Make sure you have movement in other areas, too – aim for two bowel movements per day.

  4. What We Drink

Drink more water. The amount of water we should consume depends on our size, activity level, the weather etc but should be approximately 1.5-3 litres daily. Make sure your water is filtered or from a pure source.

  5. How We Feel

In Chinese medicine, anger is the emotion associated with the liver. Acknowledge and work through anger using a journal or the help of a good counselor. Then focus your attention on all the positive things in your life and remember them daily.

Do all of these and use moderation as the key and your liver will thank you. If you feel you need an extra boost to get back into balance then come and join me in a whole food detox.
