Unlocking Freezer Potential: Healthy Choices for Convenient Nutrition

We’ve given so much attention to the kitchen cupboards, our freezers are starting to feel left out! Frozen foods are another great way to keep high-quality meals and snacks on hand. Being organised is key to having a healthy diet, keeping your blood sugar balanced and stopping sugar cravings. These days there are times when we all need convenience foods, they don't have to be unhealthy. See the recipe of the month for a quick, easy and healthy meal.

Here are our five favourite healthy food choices to keep in your freezer:

1.  Ezekiel or Essene Sprouted Bread are unique because they are made from sprouted grains, which are said to be more nutritious than their non-sprouted counterparts. Sprouting increases the levels of certain nutrients like vitamins and antioxidants and can also decrease the amount of anti-nutrients, which can interfere with the absorption of minerals. Freezing slices of this bread allows for an easy toast option full of complex carbs and fibres. Topping it with avocado adds healthy fats and makes for a nutritious, balanced meal.

2.  Organic Frozen Veggies – Having organic frozen veggies on hand is a lifesaver for those busy days when fresh produce isn’t an option. They retain most of their nutrients during the freezing process, ensuring you get a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals. They’re versatile and can be used in various dishes like stir-fries, soups, or as a side dish, making them a convenient and nutritious choice.

3.  Brown Rice  is a whole grain that is high in fibre and provides a good source of magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, thiamine, niacin, and vitamin B6. Cooking it in advance and freezing it in individual portions can save a lot of time during busy weekdays. It’s a wholesome and versatile base for various meals, pairing well with vegetables, lean proteins, or legumes, offering balanced and nutritious options.

4.  Bananas are a great source of several essential nutrients, particularly potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. Peeling and freezing them make for a creamy and nutritious addition to smoothies or can be used as a base for homemade ice cream. They act as a natural sweetener, allowing you to satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy way, and their texture when frozen adds a creamy richness to dishes.

5.  Organic Frozen Mixed Berries are known for being high in antioxidants, vitamins, and fibres while being low in calories. Having a stash of organic frozen mixed berries means you always have a quick and easy way to add flavour and nutrition to your meals. They’re a perfect addition to smoothies, oatmeal, or yoghurt, providing a refreshing taste and a myriad of health benefits.

Wellness Tip

No time to prepare veggies, even with fully stocked kitchen cupboards and freezer? Get your daily dose of greens with a high-quality green powder. Any of the following are great: wheatgrass, barley grass, kamut grass and sea vegetables, green powders will give you a huge boost of nutrition and energy. Use 1/4-1/2  tsp green powder per 8 ounces of pure, filtered water. Drink up! These green powders can help stop sugar cravings by alkalising your body.

Liquid chlorophyll can also be a great addition to our diets. It helps to rebuild and replenish our red blood cells, boosting our energy and increasing our wellbeing almost instantly. Chlorophyll has the power to regenerate our bodies at the molecular and cellular level and is known to help cleanse the body, fight infection, help heal wounds, and promote the health of the circulatory, digestive, immune, and detoxification systems. It often comes with a mild peppermint flavour so can liven up your water and help you drink more. Give it a try!
